Temporary Residence

Foreign nationals who intend to enter and stay in Canada on a temporary basis can apply to be a temporary resident. Before traveling to Canada, in most cases, a foreign national has to apply for a temporary resident visa for Canada, unless they are from a visa-exempt country.

International students or temporary workers have to first apply for a study permit or a work permit, respectively, before coming to Canada. In specific situations, individuals studying a short-term program or performing a specific type of work may be permitted to study or work in Canada without requiring a permit.
